Sandro’s Sightings: Castrum Grundulae

The tower of Castrum Grundulae or Grondola Castle in the comune of Pontremoli is all that remains of the extensive fortifications that were once the centre of many battles between the Malaspina family and the towns of Pontremoli, Parma and Piacenza, who all wanted to control the strategic access to the Val di Magra. The tower section is thought to have been built towards the end of the thirteenth century when Parma controlled the castle.
