Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), founded in 1863, is an independent, non-profit national association involved in all aspects of mountaineering in Italy, including the study of mountains and the protection of the environment. From hiking, caving, skiing, construction and maintenance of mountain refuges, to training guides, clearing trails and educational activities, CAI is involved.

From hiking, caving, skiing, construction and maintenance of mountain refuges, to training guides, clearing trails and educational activities, CAI is involved.CAI is divided into local branches organised regionally. In Lunigiana, there are two main branches Fivizzano and Pontremoli. There are also sub-groups, for example in Bagnone. CAI offers a variety of activities for members – contact your closest branch to sign up (click on the links for contact details for Fivizzzano, Pontremoli and Bagnone).
CAI Fivizzano has announced its programme for 2012 for accompanied walks, some in association with CAI Massa. The good news is that you don’t have to be a member of CAI to join individual walks. However, you do have to have to be covered by CAI’s insurance (insurance for members is included in their annual membership fee). Insurance costs €5 per person per excursion and must be arranged with CAI Fivizzano before midday on the day before the hike.
