The restored mill, on the right bank of the Rosaro, not far from the small village of Arlia, was in use from the 19th century until the late 1960s. It served most of the small communities in the area and was used to grind mainly chestnuts, wheat and maize. It also served as a warehouse and a stable for the mules that carried the grain up and down the steep mountain paths.
After 1968, the mill fell into ruin but was restored by the Comunità Montana della Lunigiana. As well as the working mill stones, there is a permanent exhibition on the watermills in Lunigiana.
The mill is managed by Legambiente Lunigiana, who also run educational tours for groups.
