On 24 and 25 March 2012 there are two very reasonably-priced guided tours of the castles of Lunigiana. The tours will be conducted in Italian, but it is a great opportunity to visit two privately-owned castles not always open to the public – the Malaspina Castle at Filattiera and Verrucola Castle, home to the family of the sculptor, Pietro Cascella.
On Saturday, 24 March, the Castle of Piagnaro and the Stele Statue Museum in Pontremoli, the Malaspina castle and the church of Sorano in Filattiera and Malgrate castle are on the itinerary, with lunch in Pontremoli. On Sunday, 25 March, the castles of Verrucola, L’Aquila (Gragnola) and Terrarossa (Licciana Nardi) will be visited, with a stopover in Fivizzano for lunch. The costs are incredibly reasonable. The charge for Saturday’s tour is €22 including the services of the guide, entrance fees, transport and lunch. The fee for Sunday’s excursion is €30, and also includes the services of the guide, entrance fees, transport and lunch. You can book both or either of the tours, and overnight accommodation can be arranged.
Full information on the tours can be found, in Italian, on Turismo in Lunigiana. You must and confirm your booking by Tuesday, 20 March. Telephone 3488097918 – 360700369.
