Christmas in Lunigiana 2014

The first weekend in December usually marks the start of the Christmas festivities in Lunigiana, and this year is no exception. In addition, the Fuoco of San Nicolò in Villafranca falls on Friday, 5 December 2014, ensuring a fiery start to the season.  This year, there are more Christmas events than ever – far too many to list here.  Available details and dates are listed on our events page and posters for the main events on our Pinterest site.

Christmas events in Lunigiana

This Christmas, there is something to keep everyone amused.  There are Christmas markets, classical and Christmas concerts, art and antique toy exhibitions, plenty of activities for children including events around the illumination of Christmas trees, the arrival of Father Christmas, puzzle solving and more.  Traditional Presepi vivente add to the Christmas atmosphere, while ice skating, cycling and snow shoeing get the family out in the fresh air.

Presepi Vivente continue to be popular. Don’t miss Malgrate’s wonderfully atmospheric event as this year they even have their own ‘money’.  Other presepi vivente take place in Pontremoli, Albiano Magra, Caprio, and of course, the best known one is at Equi Terme. There is also the mechanical presepe at Pallarone, and presepi in every village. The famous illuminated presepe at Manarola in the Cinque Terre is also worth a trip.

If you need a bit of exercise, try the outdoor ice rink at Villafranca, join in the Father Christmas cycle ride, also at Villafranca, or try out an electric bike on Farfalle in Cammino’s gastronomic tour of the Bagnone Valley. The ice rink at Cerrito Laghi is open over weekends and holidays, and if you are a fan of skiing, check the snow forecasts at Zum Zeri. And keep an eye open for snow-shoe excursions.

If you are still undecided about where to eat on Christmas Day, pop over to Ciao Lunigiana’s Pinterest site for the menus of some local restaurants.

The main centres of activity (as you would expect) are Villafranca, Pontremoli, Fivizzano and Aulla. The comune of Villafranca has pulled together all the events in Villafranca, Filetto, Malgrate, Mezzizo and Fornoli under the umbrella of Natale Insiemewhich has its own Facebook page.  The Christmas programme for Aulla and surrounds can be found here, while the main comune sites list Christmas events.
