It is always a exciting to discover a new restaurant that offers delicious food at a reasonable price, but when the dishes on offer are produced from the best local ingredients, lovingly prepared, it is indeed a real pleasure. Antica Trattoria Pinelli in Montelungo, located about 8.5 kilometres from Pontremoli on the windy road up to the Cisa Pass, is just such a place.
There is nothing pretentious about Antica Trattoria Pinelli. If you blink as you pass through Montelungo, you could easily miss it. But once inside, you will find a welcoming family restaurant run by Giacomo and Laura Pinelli. Laura reigns in the kitchen, while Giacomo is front of house. Don’t expect a menu. Instead, based on the best ingredients available that day, the options will be presented to you, with plenty of choice and advice on the best dishes of the day.
The mixed antipasto has a variety of delicacies from Lunigiana, including salumi, lardo, torta d’erbi, pattone, rice cake, cheese with honey, and various other bits of deliciousness. The new season porcini were on offer, and we were really pleased that Giacomo insisted we try not only porcini with Laura’s homemade tagliatelle, but also lightly fried in breadcrumbs. Delicious. Other dishes sampled included ravioli with potato, duck, rabbit, chicken and wild boar. All excellent. The wines are local.
Giacomo is also a well published author of Italian fiction. Copies of his most recent novel, Occhi tra le foglie, set in Parma, Lunigiana and Cornwall is available for sale in the restaurant, and his new novel will be out in time for Christmas.
